Bermuda prepares for Royal visit

  • Prince Edward was last on the island in 2003 after hurricane Fabian hit the island.

His Royal Highness Prince Edward is to visit Bermuda next month.

Government House announced the three-day visit, from March 16-18, this afternoon.

It will be Prince Edward's third visit to the Island.

He first visited in 1992 and was last here in 2003, immediately after Hurricane Fabian.
The Earl of Wessex will make the trip with his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

“The main purpose of their visit is to celebrate The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Bermuda,” said a spokeswoman.

“The Earl of Wessex is a trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation and chairman of the International Council. The Award programme, which operates in 132 countries, was set up by his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1956.

“In Bermuda, the Earl of Wessex will present Gold Awards to young people who have achieved that standard, and both [Royal Highnesses] will meet many young people and volunteers who are participating in the programme at approved Award centres and visit other educational institutions.”

Further details of the Royal Visit will be announced in due course.
